What Are Dental Sealants?

Dental sealants are thin, protective coatings we paint onto the chewing surfaces of your back teeth (molars and premolars). These teeth have deep grooves and pits that are difficult to clean with regular brushing, making them vulnerable to cavities.

The sealant material bonds into these grooves, creating a smooth, protective shield that keeps food particles and bacteria out. Think of it as a raincoat for your teeth—it doesn't change how your teeth look or feel, but it provides an extra layer of protection where you need it most.

Who Benefits from Sealants?

While sealants are most commonly applied to children's permanent molars as soon as they come in (usually around ages 6 and 12), they're not just for kids. Teens and adults without decay or fillings in their molars can also benefit from this simple preventive treatment.

The Sealant Process

Getting sealants is quick, comfortable, and completely painless—no drilling or numbing required.

We clean and dry the tooth, then apply a special gel that helps the sealant bond properly. After rinsing and drying again, we paint the liquid sealant onto the tooth's grooves. A special curing light hardens the sealant in seconds, and you're done.

The entire appointment typically takes just one visit, and you can eat and drink normally right away.

How Long Do Sealants Last?

With proper care, sealants can protect teeth for up to 10 years. We check them at your regular dental checkups and can easily repair or reapply them if needed.

During this time, sealants can reduce the risk of cavities in molars by nearly 80%—a significant benefit for a simple, one-time treatment.

Caring for Sealed Teeth

Sealants are durable, but they work best when combined with good oral hygiene. Continue brushing twice daily, flossing, and visiting us for regular cleanings and exams.

Avoid chewing on hard objects like ice or pen caps, which can damage sealants (and your natural teeth). If a sealant chips or falls out, let us know so we can replace it quickly.
